Course Title: Social Media Tools and Techniques (PER-344)

Description:

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to use intermediate social media tools and techniques for situational awareness during an emergency. Participants will learn and use tools such as mapping applications, data analysis, and data mining for research and management. It aims to reach public and private sector organizations who have responsibility for conveying disaster-related information to the public or who are responsible for gathering information during and after a disaster.

The course will supplement and build upon NDPTC’s existing FEMA-certified performance-level course, PER-304 Social Media for Natural Disaster Response and Recovery, by providing more in-depth training in the use of social media for disaster management operations.

Target Audience:

The course content is intended for public and private sector organizations who have responsibility for conveying disaster-related information to the public or who are responsible for gathering information during and after a disaster. This could include the members or representatives of the following groups:

  • Community Emergency and Community Response Teams such as neighborhood organizations or community associations, and various response teams who have communication needs before, during and after a response.
  • State, county and local emergency management agencies.
  •  NGOs and other agencies such as the Red Cross or United Way.

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of PER-304 Social Media for Natural Disaster Response and Recovery.

Recommended courses include: IS-42, IS-100, IS-200 and IS-700

Requirements:

1) Participants will be required to bring their own laptop or wi-fi enabled device to the training session for the hands-on exercises.
2) This course conducts a Pre-test, Post-test, and Course Evaluation online. If you do not have an online account prior to the class start date, you may not be able to participate in the class.

Max Enrollment: 30 - 40 participants
Test Requirements:
  • Pre-test to be completed PRIOR to the course. Assists to assess familiarity with the course subject material.
  • Post test to be completed at completion of course. To receive a FEMA issued Certificate of Completion, a post test score of at least 70% must be obtained.
Costs: The cost of developing and delivering training is covered by a cooperative agreement with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). There is no cost to the individual for taking the course. we do not cover the cost of travel or lodging to attend training.
